This week marks the official start of the EU Sustainable Energy Week. On this occasion, CEMEP publishes a new Brochure which details the importance of using a system approach to maximise energy savings potential in electric drive systems.

The Full Brochure highlights the value in matching the motor and control method to the actual application needs, and analyses the challenges but also the numerous opportunities to start saving energy and implement energy efficient systems.

Investing in a system approach means shifting the regulatory focus from a component approach to consider the operation of all components and their influence on each other. Such a system-approach can help find the most appropriate ways to reduce the energy consumption in a system and enable efficiency. For example, an Electric Drive System Technology, such as electric motors and variable speed drives (VSDs), has the potential to drive huge

energy savings, with up to 40% depending on the application.

This potential is even more important in the current context, in which the need to save energy is key to fast forward the green transition.

To achieve greater levels of energy savings CEMEP highlights the following key messages:

• Only increasing the efficiency level of individual components (e.g. motor or VSD) does not generate significant energy savings.
• A System Approach must be implemented to enable efficiency, when components become a system optimising the energy consumption of the application.
• Key measures should be mandated to start saving energy, such as using Life Cycle Cost assessment; expert cooperation & knowledge creation; and highlighting non-energy benefits (e.g. lower carbon footprint).
